Pre-war museum deposit once again in owner’s hands

Over the past several months we have been carrying out an archival search to establish the fate of works of art belonging to one of Poland’s aristocratic families before the Second World War.

As a result of the search, it was possible to establish that one of the paintings of European origin was deposited with the museum in 1939. A detailed demonstration of the provenance of this work of art, as well as confirmation of its identity, made it possible to enter into discussions regarding its release. The detailed reconstruction of the painting’s pre-war history enabled a positive conclusion to be reached without the need for legal action for its return. In recent days, the work was handed over to its rightful owner by protocol.

The case was handled by Maciej Obrębski and Damian Malicki.
